Impedance and Wake eld in a Superconducting Beam

چکیده

The impedance and the longitudinal wake eld in a superconducting beam pipe are derived. At low frequencies, this impedance is purely inductive, while at higher frequencies it approaches the resistive-wall impedance of a normal conductor. For very short bunches, the resistive heating of the beam pipe can induce quenches of the superconductor.

Wake "eld of electron beam accelerated in a RF-gun of free electron laser `ELSAa

Wake "eld e!ects driven by a coasting relativistic charged particle beam have been studied for various cavity geometries. In the particular case of a cylindrical `pill-boxa cavity, an analytical expression of the (E, B)(x, t) map has been obtained as a development on the complete base cavity normal modes. We extend this method to the case of an accelerated beam, which leaves the downstream face...

Trapped Modes in CESR Sliding

Previous experiments had found apparent trapped modes in the sliding joints which would cause a longitudinal instability in the beam. Pairs of bunches were run at various spacings to attempt to detect the eeects of the modes through wake eld heating. Data taking was time consuming, and insuucient numbers of data points could be taken to t to the wake elds. To help solve this, an attempt was mad...

Wake Field Study Using Two Spaced Bunches 1

Wake eld studies using calorimetric methods are reported. Measurements show interference between wake elds generated by two bunches. The described technique can be used to determine which elements introduce bunch coupling. Introduction Due to nite resistance and irregularities of beam pipe wall the bunch of charged particles traveling through a beam pipe leaves behind a wake eld. The structure ...

Terahertz Wake elds in the Superconducting Cavities of the TESLA-FEL Linac

The operation of a Free Electron Laser (FEL) in the vacuum ultraviolet or X-ray regime requires the acceleration of electron bunches with an rms length of 25 to 50 m. The wake elds generated by these subpicosecond bunches extend into a frequency range well beyond the threshold for Cooper pair breakup (about 750 GHz) in superconducting niobium. For this reason there has been considerable concern...

Impedance of Beam Pipes with Smooth Shallow Corrugations

The beam impedance of monopole modes in a pipe with periodic, smooth and shallow corrugation has been calculated. The approach uses an orthogonal TM field expansion with Bessel functions and an impedance boundary condition, which takes into account resistive wall effects. The approach is valid for corrugations with period lengths larger, smaller and of the same order as the free space wavelengt...
